Children's learning is a primary responsibility of a school. Madrona works very hard at maximizing use of time in the school day to the benefit of all.
Distractions and interruptions can have significant impact on learning, if they happen repeatedly. We believe that most distractions within a classroom either can be headed off before they occur, or managed swiftly and compassionately. In this way a lesson can continue with minimal interruption.
In rare circumstances, a child may be having an exceedingly trying day and thus exerting a negative impact on learning for others. In this situation, care of the child will pass to another teacher not involved in the lesson, until the child is on track again.
In general though, when learning is motivating and challenging, children’s focus is acute and distractions are rare. It is one of the great pleasures of teaching at Madrona to see our entire class fully absorbed in a variety of activities, oblivious even to our close observation.
